Tattoo Ideas in Elvish Script from The Lord of the Rings

J.R.R. Tolkien was a genius. What other author that lived in his day constructed an entirely new language that he later included in each of his famous books? Tolkien did have an advantage, however, having studied and created languages as a hobby for most of his life.

The Elvish language that Tolkien created for the purpose of The Lord of the Rings was primarily spoken by elves and fairies. It has several derivatives including Quenya and Sindarin, which are the most advanced and popular.

The languages of Sindarin and Quenya are usually written in the Tengwar script, which Tolkien also created. The script that is on the "One Ring to Rule Them All" is actually written in the flowery scripted black speech of Mordor, which is derived from Elvish.

However, Elvish and other Middle-earth languages can also be written using the Latin alphabet if various accents are properly applied. When I saw The Fellowship of the Ring after reading the books, I became obsessed with getting an Elvish tattoo.

Luckily, my girlfriend at the time and a friend of ours were equally enamored, and after some extensive online research we were able to find an Elvish quote that means "The stars will shine on the hour of our meeting."

We split the quote into thirds and each got part of it tattooed somewhere on our bodies.

The cast of The Lord of the Rings did something similar. When filming wrapped up, they decided to commemorate the year and a half they spent shooting in New Zealand in a unique way.

The nine actors who comprised the fellowship decided to get a word done in Elvish script that symbolizes the number nine. The design was drawn by artist Roger Ingerton, t John Rhys-Davies (who played Gimli the dwarf) was the only member who opted out of the activity due to personal reasons. He sent his stunt double, Brett Beattie, in his place.

Two of the four hobbits, Sean Astin and Billy Boyd, got the tattoo on their ankles to pay homage to the fake hairy feet they had to wear throughout the filming of the movie, a process which took over two hours to complete, while others simply tattooed the design on their upper arms.

Elvish Sayings

Ta nae amin saesa — It was my pleasure.

Amin n'rangwa edanea — I don't understand these humans.

Amin mela lle — I love you.

A'maelamin — My beloved

Elear — Visionary

Amin khiluva lle a' gurtha ar' thar — I will follow you to death and beyond.

Mela en' coiamin — Love of my life

      Do any of you understand what Tolkien was about? The ring chant was the ULTIMATE EVIL never to be spoken, written or thought by any of the Free peoples.. It was much a chant of power as that spoken Frodo, "Elebereth Gilthoneil" but much more to be feared, what I can't understand is those people who have got married under the script of the ring??? J R R Tolkien said it was the ultimate evil to bind the speaker and the ring together forever in darkness ...................

      This one was the only website I have found so far that works for an instant translation http://lexiquetos.org/nombres-tengwar/ , but it's not 100% accurate (for example, there are two symbols for the letter 'r', one for 'r' as in 'red' and the other for 'r' as in 'car'. This website only gives the 'r' as in 'red') There may be other flaws, so be careful.

      I love the tattoos. They are beautiful!

      @Mith-- you said: 'I have no idea what either "Not all who wander are lost" or "Death is certain, life is not" are meant to be saying.' Both are quotes from Tolkien LOR trilogy.

      Eiryn, no need for you to step in and act like you you know what you're talking aabout. People are just searching to get an idea. Please gently remove the tampon from your vagina and go take some midol.Oh, and learn how to spell (finally). If it's bothering you so much and you're telling us to stop searching online, then why are you even on this website in the first place? You contradicted yourself, Sweety.

      Anywho,

      I am also looking into getting a tatoo of this language. I want mine to to say "an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind." it's by Ghandi. I tried to download the font, but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

      Mith! finaaly someone made sense

      all you guys asking for translations on this site or going to google and doing it your selves are just dumb arses. go to a forum and find a "pro" who actually understands the elven scripts

      (and quite obviously there is no one on here answering your requests so stop asking)

      To all those people who are thinking of getting an Elvish tattoo, please BE CAREFUL: it's so easy to get it wrong.

      For instance:

      - the two above labelled "Life" and "Dream" actually read "Lif" and "Drem";

      - the one above labelled "Peregrin" actually reads "-fvf(?)fs(?)";

      - "There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I have loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me this has always been enough" although is mostly readable, is riddled with errors and written in an incorrect style;

      - I have no idea what either "Not all who wander are lost" or "Death is certain, life is not" are meant to be saying.

      If you want to learn how to write Tengwar (the Elvish alphabet) see: http://at.mansbjorkman.net/tengwar.htm or go to http://www.tengwar.art.pl/tengwar/ott/start.php?l=... to translate English into Tengwar.

      With regards to translating English to Elvish (by the way, there is no one Elvish language, there are in fact two main ones: Sindarin and Quenya), visit a Tolkien forum and ask someone there to do it for you.

      Honestly, do not just type a few words into Google and think you have got a result, you haven't. Please, please, PLEASE do not go and have a tattoo done without checking first with someone who knows what they're talking about, otherwise, like the people above, you'll be walking around with a tattoo of gobbledegook.

      Hey everyone! I have decided I want to take the plunge and get a tattoe done and want it to be in elvish... I appreciate there is a fear that getting something like this translated by an online translator may lead to getting an incorrect translation. Having this permanenantly on you would be obviouisly depressing if you realised it was wrong... so rather than chance it why doesn't anyone serious enough to get it done, and honour JRR Tolkien, just pick up the book themselves and learn the language?! at least enough to write the script your after. This would be more rewarding than getting someone else who has gone to the trouble to do it for you, and could only add to the beauty of getting this type of tattoe. Anyway, just my opinion!

      For a real understanding of what Tolkien is all about:

      Galadriel: I amar prestar aen, han mathon ne nen, han mathon ne chae a han noston ned 'wilith.

      Galadriel: 'The world is changed; I can feel it in the water, I can feel it in the earth, I can smell it in the air.'

      I amar n. 'the world'.

      prestar aen v. pass. 'is changed'; cf. presta- 'affect, trouble' (LR 380). David Salo explains it as aen 'they' and prestar '[they] change' in Elfling message no. 16323.

      han pron. 'it'.

      mathon v. pres. 'I feel'; cf. matha- 'feel, stroke, handle' (LR 371).

      ne, ned prep. 'in, of'.

      nen n. 'water'.

      cae, mut. chae n. 'earth'.

      a conj. 'and'.

      noston v. 'I smell'; *nosta- 'smell'; cf. stem NUS-; Q nusta- 'smell'. In the official recording ennorously (?) nostron, from **nostra-?

      'wilith n. 'air as a region'; usually ned 'in' triggers a stop mutation; if so it should be *ne gwilith 'in the air'. However David Salo writes: "I would not expect on historical grounds for *w to behave exactly like *g; since *w > gw is an instance of 'fortition' (change of approximant to stop) and *g > zero is the opposite, lenition. If we started with, say, *ed+wilith (or *wilitthe), then - assuming that the two words remain in contact throughout their development, then the fortition never gets a chance to take place. You would have e wilith instead of *ed wilith if the loss of the final consonant occurred, generally, before any other consonant" (David Salo, Elfling message from Jan 16, 2002).

      For everyone here. A lot of the sites will provide you a *literal* translation from English to Tengwar, but that is not elvish. Don't just translate using a site or you will look like a plonker.

      Underneath all of Tolkiens "languages" was a grammar and a rationale. If you can't understand it yourself, please don't get it tattooed on your body. It's like getting Chinese or Japanese characters tattooed because it looks cool.

      I found a website at tengwarscribe.com that does Elvish transcriptions for tattoos and other writings. I'm planning to use them for my next tattoo.

      Wow, nice photos! I have an Elvish tattoo myself... it's around my wrist and says: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." It's my favorite "Lord of the Rings" quote, and I think also a good quote to live by.

      I had mine written out by calligrapher Daniel Reeve (who did the calligraphy and map work in the "Lord of the Rings" films). He's such a nice guy, and he'll write out just about any quote in any script (and design just about any Middle-Earth inspired tattoo) for a small price. I highly recommend contacting him with any English-to-Elvish questions!

      Its written on my wrist as the man I love has the shining star on his....

      There is a piece of software that you can download that will make translations into Elvish script. It has all the different "modes" of speech and also different fonts. You´ll have to look for it yourself though if you really want it. Hehe.

      I used it to translate my tattoo that I have on my forearm. My tattoo is done in UV reactive ink, so it is invisible except under Ultra Violet/blacklight, where it glows white.

      most of this elvish is wrong(w/ the exception of the writing from thew books) a lot of letters need a letter carrier to have a long vowl sound, otherwise they will ALWAYS be the short sound
