Harry Potter Tattoo Ideas
During my travels this past week I've been seeing a lot of billboards ominously proclaiming: Harry Potter 7, Part 2 -- It All Ends 7.15. Although I saw the first three movies and radically enjoyed the third one, I never quite got into the series the way most people around me did. My best friend and her husband are Harry Potter fanatics. They bought their tickets for the midnight showing of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" several weeks ago and have spent the last few days obsessively re-watching the previous seven films in preparation for opening night. I was at their house the other day while they were in the midst of their marathon, and happened to catch the beginning of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and now...I can't stop thinking about the series. I can't understand why I didn't latch on to this phenomenon earlier in life, and I have big plans to put my life on hold, Netflix all seven of them and hopefully see the newest, and final, installment this weekend. The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling and the eight movies that followed are widely popular, and many fans have the tattoos to prove it.
Dark Mark tattoos
The Dark Mark is a symbol that is tattooed on the arm of every Death Eater. Since Death Eaters do Lord Voldemort's bidding, the brand is a snake protruding from the mouth of a skull. The snake is symbolic of the house of Slytherin, one of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. When Voldemort needs to call upon the Death Eaters, his minions feel it in their tattoo, the snake on their arms starts moving and they know they need to get to him at once. The same symbol can be conjured up in the air by using the Morsmordre spell.
Deathly Hallows tattoos
The Deathly Hallows are a legend as well known to the characters in the world of Harry Potter as Mother Goose and Aesop's fables are known in real life. Every child grows up being told the tale. The Deathly Hallows refer to three particularly powerful magical objects created by Death: the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility. As the legend goes, whoever possesses all three objects would become the Master of Death, and essentially become invincible. No one has ever owned all three Hallows at the same time. Although Harry Potter possessed all of them, he never had more than two at once. The Deathly Hallows are symbolized very simply by a circle and a straight line within a triangle. The vertical line represents the Elder Wand, the circle is the Resurrection Stone, and the triangle is the Cloak of Invisibility.
Harry Potter Quotes Tattoos
A lot of the best Harry Potter quotes, from both the movies and the books, are a little long and take place in a conversation between two or more characters. Quotes such as those are probably too large for an average size tattoo, unless you're dedicated enough to the series to let it cover your entire back or thigh. Here is just a small sampling of excellent Harry Potter quotes that would make excellent tattoo ideas:
- "You place too much importance... on the so-called purity of blood! You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!" --Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- "Time is making fools of us again." --Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- "We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry, but battle on." --Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" --Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
- "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." --Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." --Steven Kloves (screenplay), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter Spells tattoos
The most popular and well-known spell from Harry Potter seems to be expecto patronum, which is classical Latin for "I await a protector". Azkhaban Prison is guarded by Dementors, evil creatures who exist solely to suck the happiness out of you. Expecto patronum is a difficult spell to cast, but when invoked correctly it emits a force field that surrounds you and protects you from the Dementors. The spell involves conjuring up your happiest memory in your mind, then pushing it into the protective space around you. It represents good memories, protection, and your friends and family keeping you safe.
Other interesting and meaningful spells include: colloportus (from the Latin word porta, meaning "a gate"), which closes a door and binds it so that it can’t be opened; fidelius (from the Latin meaning "loyalty"), a very powerful spell which allows a secret to be hidden within the secret keeper’s soul; incendio, the lighting of a fire; protego (Latin word meaning "to protect"), which protects the user and sends a spell back on an opponent.
Harry Potter anime tattoos
Die hard fans may not appreciate the creative interpretation of the beloved main character, Harry Potter, but I'm a sucker for anything cute so I couldn't resist showcasing these HP anime tattoos. Rumor actually has it that a Harry Potter anime television series is in the works for 2012.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a British boarding school for magic located in Scotland. It is where Harry Potter and his best friends, Hermione and Ron, among thousands of other students, attend classes to be trained in the art of wizardry. The Hogwarts crest, like a coat of arms, displays it's motto "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus", which means "Never tickle a sleeping dragon", along with the symbol of the four Houses at Hogwarts. (Hogwarts students are divided into four separate groups: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.)
